MEST4 Linked production: Research and planning

Research

Establishing shots throughout the first few seconds of the clips are common within this genre, assuming we create a trailer then these shots are typical key conventions which we would be required to add to the production. The fast paced editing throughout the trailer generates a sense of drama among the viewers which is definitely necessary for us if we are to create a trailer, it will be vital in order to maintain the audiences attention.

Although the two trailers are outdated and not as modern as the previous two, they are representative of the crime-thriller genre which is the direction we're aiming towards. The trailer captures the crime element of the production within its' conventions i.e. slow paced editing which indulges the audience, the enigma codes throughout which captivates the audience thus maintaining attention. The intensity created through the fast paced editing during the beginning of Pulp Fiction differs from the slow introduction of Bella Mafia, but both equally keep the viewers focused. The mise-en-scene such as the the close up shots of the gun and the female characters are key conventions of this genre and are also enigmatic, creating a sense of drama.

Other key conventions such as the texts that appear on the screen i.e. "Betrayal", "Crime" are common amongst this genre but it is difficult to envision us using this in our production as they seem quite outdated and not as intriguing as they may have been in the 90's.

MEST4 Preliminary exercise: evaluation

1) Why did you choose this particular recreation and how does it link to your main production?
This scene extracted from the feature film DOPE has some relation to my main production in regards to the representation of women being one of the themes explored by the film.

The reason why this particular scene was chosen is due to its intricacy in attention to detail. Aspects of production such as timing, directing actors, framing and subtle camera movements and angles were all practised as a result.

2) What difficulties did you face in producing this recreation?
Logistical difficulties including casting, setting prep, timings and equipment availability were most profound of all, among other inevitable ones such as directing the actors to accurately imitate the scene.

3) What are the strengths of the production?
It resembles the timing of the actual production and is cohesive.

4) What aspects would you look to improve?
Camera quality, equipment - but above all: SOUND.

5) What lessons will you take from this process that will help you with your main production?
Sound

6) Now that you are ready to start your actual linked production, explain clearly what you will be creating and how confident you are in delivering this.
Brief: A young lady finds herself caught up in criminality with a notorious lady mob boss as she seeks for romance with a secretive stranger.

We are extremely confident that we can produce this, our preliminary task has prepared us for the difficulties we might come across and we are up to the challenge and feel well prepared to produce a great production.
